2016 Cheat Mountain Salamander / Wild Heart Trip Information

Wild Heart Trip Option A – Departing Cass

This first option of the “Wild Heart of West Virginia” Adventure Package begins in Cass, WV. Your journey begins as you depart the Cass depot at 11:45 AM on scheduled Wild Heart dates. The ride is in open air, covered cars pushed by the mighty steam-driven Shays, up a 6% mountain grade past Whittaker Station, located four miles up the track from Cass.

At the remote location of Old Spruce, passengers continuing to Elkins will transfer to the vintage, diesel-powered Cheat Mountain Salamander. A sandwich buffet of cold cuts and condiments will be available onboard. (Lunch is included in your ticket cost) The remaining 4-hour trip to Elkins takes you through many pristine areas only accessible by rail! Stops include a 30-minute layover at the former site of Spruce, once the highest and coldest incorporated logging town east of the Mississippi, a short station stop at Cheat Bridge and lastly, a 20-minute layover at the beautiful High Falls of Cheat. Your trip will make its final arrival at the Elkins depot at approximately 5:30 PM.

Upon arriving in Elkins, you are free to check in to your hotel, enjoy dinner and take in a show. When booking this trip, it is important to know you will be on foot after departing the train. Here at Mountain Rail we can help customize your trip by booking a package to include lodging, meals and attractions at locations walkable from the train depot or with a hotel that offers free shuttle service.

Your return trip to Cass would begin the following day, or other pre-determined date, when you depart the Elkins depot at 9:15 AM with an approximate return time to Cass of 4:45 PM.

Wild Heart Trip Option B – Departing Elkins

This next Wild Heart option has you beginning your trip in Elkins, where you’ll depart from the historic Elkins depot at 9:15 AM. Once on board, enjoy the ride on the vintage, diesel-powered Cheat mountain Salamander, traveling through remote areas, most only accessible by rail! A cold sandwich lunch buffet will be provided on board. Your Cheat Mountain Salamander trip includes a 30 minute layover at the beautiful High Falls of Cheat, a short station stop at Cheat Bridge, and ends at Old Spruce where passengers transfer to the Cass Scenic Railroad steam powered train. The Cass train offers open air, covered cars, pushed by mighty coal-fired steam driven Shay locomotives.  From Old Spruce, your next stop will be at gorgeous Bald Knob, the third highest point in West Virginia!  A 30 minute layover at the top of Bald Knob allows for views into two states (on a clear day) and time to relax or use the restroom.

Once you depart Bald Knob, it’s time to head down the mountain to spend a night or two in in the original early 1900s company houses in the small town of Cass! The Shay arrives at the Cass depot at approximately 4:45 PM, with time to take in the history of this old logging town. Be advised, there is no cell phone reception in Cass!
