Join the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad’s Cass Scenic Railroad for the 2018 Rail Heritage Weekend in Cass, West Virginia. The three-day event will cater to railfan enthusiasts, photographers, and historians with an interest for West Virginia’s unique rail and logging past. This weekend event will concentrate on recreating photo scenes from the original steam railroad days in Cass. The event begins Friday evening, May 18 with a special train from Cass to Whittaker for a logger’s dinner at Whittaker Station, followed with a night photography session at Whittaker featuring a steam-powered freight train. This is the first time a night photo shoot has taken place at Whittaker in more than 10 years.
On Saturday May 19, a freight and passenger train will depart from Cass with photo stops enroute to Spruce. We will concentrate on the Cass mainline for much of Saturday morning before taking a break for lunch at Whittaker. Our day continues in the afternoon with multiple photo stops between Whittaker and Spruce with an afternoon emphasis on passing trains at Spruce. Once operations conclude at Spruce, we’ll return to Cass at approximately 4:00 p.m. Saturday’s dinner is on your own.
We’ll gather at the Cass Shops around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening for seasonal and restoration announcements and a night photo shoot inside the Cass Shops featuring industrial-style photo opportunities and human interest props. This will also be an opportunity to take photos of multiple locomotives under steam in the vicinity of the shops. Saturday evening’s festivities will conclude at 9:00 p.m.
On Sunday morning May 20, we will gather at Cass for a select number of staged photos and runbys featuring at least two locomotives. While part of Sunday’s trip will concentrate on unique angles around Cass, there will also be photo opportunities along the former Greenbrier line featuring steam-powered freight consists. The event will conclude around 12:00 p.m. Noon on Sunday.
The new photo series is part of a historical series being debuted by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad to showcase the restoration efforts of the railroad’s personnel and to embrace the preservation of West Virginia’s railway history.
