SHENANDOAH VALLEY

Serving Augusta and Rockingham County, VA

Rail map showing the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad (Shenandoah Valley) in Rockingham and Augusta, with stations and interchanges.

The Shenandoah Valley Railroad (DGVR) operates as a joint venture among several local industries and business partners, making it one of the most uniquely structured and collaboratively managed short line railroads in the United States.

Its cooperative ownership model ensures that the railroad’s operations are closely aligned with the economic needs of the region it serves. The SV runs over 20.2 miles of track between Staunton and Pleasant Valley, Virginia, providing a crucial transportation link for manufacturers, agricultural producers, and distributors throughout the Shenandoah Valley. A compact but efficient yard in Staunton enables the railroad to interchange freight with both the Buckingham Branch Railroad and CSX Transportation, offering access to east–west rail corridors. At the northern end of the line, SV interchanges with Norfolk Southern, giving customers additional routing choices and helping secure competitive freight rates across multiple Class I rail networks.

Strategically positioned along the heavily traveled Interstate 81 corridor—just north of the major I-64 interchange—the railroad provides convenient multi-modal logistics options that support both existing shippers and future industrial development. This location allows businesses to seamlessly integrate trucking and rail services, enhancing supply-chain flexibility and reducing transportation costs in one of Virginia’s most important commercial regions.
